The latest on Beach Area 1: Demolition & Hotel

Demolition is already underway at Beach Area 1! The Town of Wasaga Beach is getting a hotel on the beach and we're finally getting rid of the dilapidated shops and storefronts that's lined our boardwalk. We've come a long way to get here!

In late January 2017, the Wasaga Beach Town Council unveiled the Downtown Development Master Plan, envisioning a comprehensive redevelopment of the downtown and beachfront areas. The plan outlined a capital investment of $625 million over a span of more than 20 years. The initial phase, projected to take five to ten years, was estimated at $200 million, focusing on two key development zones: one on the beach and another across the river.

Strategic partnerships

In July 2018, the town entered into a Letter of Intent with FRAM Building Group to develop town-owned lands in the downtown and beachfront areas. However, by December 2018, under new council leadership, a review of these development plans was initiated, leading to the lapse of the agreement with FRAM by the end of that year. Despite this, the Downtown Master Plan remained active, and efforts to identify suitable development partners continued.

Community engagement and feedback

The redevelopment plans have been a topic of active community discussion. In September 2021, the Wasaga Beach Ratepayers Association expressed concerns about the proposed development densities, leading to public protests in October. The town addressed these concerns, emphasizing the importance of accurate information and community involvement in the planning process.

Project approval and unveiling

After years of planning and consultation, the comprehensive redevelopment plan received approval in June 2024. The official unveiling took place at a public meeting on June 20, attended by hundreds of community members at the RecPlex. Mayor Brian Smith, alongside representatives from FRAM Building Group and Sunray Group of Hotels, presented the detailed plans, marking a significant milestone in the town's journey toward revitalization.

Phase one: Breaking ground

The first phase of the redevelopment is set to commence in Spring 2025. This initial stage will involve the demolition of several outdated structures along Beach Drive, making way for new developments. A centerpiece of this phase is the construction of a modern 150-room hotel, poised to attract tourists and provide upscale accommodations, thereby boosting local tourism and economy.

Economic and community benefits

This transformative project is poised to bring numerous benefits to the Town of Wasaga Beach:

  • Economic Growth: The influx of visitors drawn by the new hotel and revitalized beachfront is expected to stimulate local businesses, create job opportunities, and increase municipal revenues.
  • Enhanced Tourism: By offering modern amenities and attractions, Wasaga Beach aims to solidify its reputation as a premier destination, attracting tourists year-round.
  • Community Development: The redevelopment will provide residents with improved public spaces, recreational facilities, and a renewed sense of pride in their community.

The Wasaga Beach beachfront redevelopment is more than just a construction project; it's a bold step toward a brighter future for the town and its residents. With strategic planning, community collaboration, and a clear vision, Wasaga Beach is set to transform its shoreline into a dynamic hub of activity and growth.
