Shop local - not like the Town

The Town spends nearly $10k per month on Amazon, primarily, says the Mayor, for the convenience of having door-to-door delivery. So shop local, unless it's more convenient to go elsewhere.

300%+ increase from previous years

This past year, the Town spent ~$9,800 per month, on average. That's up, considerably, from the $2-$3k per month that it was spending on Amazon just a few years ago. As long as the spend is under the $10k threshold that requires the Town to shop alternatives, it mostly flys under the radar.

Most municipalities probably do the same

...the just don't admit to it. To its credit, our Town does publish these numbers in full transparency. Besides convenience, it's likely true that the selection is superior to what smaller towns can offer at local shops. Yes, Big Box stores will have more options, but that's not shopping local either, is it.

Why shopping local matters

When you buy from a local shop or eat at a local restaurant, your $ go to people that live in your community. Those same dollars that they got from you, then go on to be spent on other local amenities - like their staff, who in turn do the same in a cycle familiar to economic buffs. As much as 66% of the money we spend locally is circulated back into town - compared to less than 10% of that when we shop at retailers like Amazon.

So, what matters more; seeing your community become more financially sound or, well, convenience?
